Giving

Here is chapter one of my book. It won't be as it is in the book, because in the book there are blank picture frames that children can draw what they have read. When they have read certain pages they will be able to retain more of what they read by drawing what they see in their minds. This book was written with the "Beginning Reader" and "Special Needs" in mind. If you like this chapter and know a child who would enjoy reading or listening to it being read to him or her, then please obtain a copy at Amazon.com and give as a gift.

Chapter 1.

The Adventure Starts

It was a quiet day on the Jones farm. The sky was blue with a few billowy clouds. The peacefulness

was broken by the sound of chickens squawking and flapping their wings. Billy and his brothers and

sisters got rushed out of the hen house by their mother. Hay and feathers were flying everywhere.

“You chicks stay close!” Mother Hen squawked. “The eggs are hatching, and I can’t be worrying

about all of you.”

Billy didn’t hear the warning, because he was running away. He saw the green grass behind the old gray and white farmhouse and wanted to explore.

His brothers, Lenny and Denny, called him. “Billy, where are you?”

Billy ran past an old wooden swing hanging from a large maple tree. He looked back at his brothers and fell into a rabbit hole. He tumbled and slid down the hole. He got up but couldn’t see much. It was dark. He caught a whiff of something, a smell of the unknown, and it scared him.

Billy started running. He ran, and seeing a light up ahead, he ran faster. He ran out of the hole

and slammed into a sleeping dog. The startled dog opened his yellow eyes.

“Well, hello there, little guy. My name is Rupert,” said the dog. “I was just waiting for my rabbit friend, Fluffy,” he added with a grin. “Who are you?”

“I’m Billy,” he said as he looked at Rupert, just missing the grin on his face.

“How did you get here?” Rupert asked as he sniffed Billy’s little head.

“I fell into a hole and came out there,” Billy said as he pointed to the hole.

“Where do you live?”

“I don’t know. My momma kicked us out of the hen house.”

Rupert pawed at the ground. “Now why did she do that?”

“Eggs were hatching. It was crowded. We had to go outside.”

“There must be lots of chickens on the farm again,” Rupert said as he tilted his head. “Why don’t you know where you live?”

“I fell into the hole, and now I’m lost.”

“There’s a farm just on the other side of the meadow. I bet that’s where you live.” Rupert looked into the distance. “I’ll show you how to get there.”

While they walked across the field, Rupert said, “Don’t tell anyone I brought you home.”

“Why not?”

“Hannah, the farm dog, doesn’t like me. I had her job when she was a pup. She may not like that we’re friends.”

He took Billy to the edge of the meadow. “I’m going to leave you now. Have a good night. I’ll see you soon.” Rupert licked his lips as Billy walked away from him and into the barnyard.

“Momma, Momma, come quick, Billy’s back!” Denny yelled and ran to him. Mother Hen flew out

of the coup with relief.
